The designer, known for his sultry take on style, will show a softer side starting in September with the launch of the four-fragrance White Musk Collection.

Riffing on musk notes, the collection is to be part of Ford’s Private Blend lineup of scents. “I thought I should create something decidedly feminine, something lighter in both color and scent,” said Ford, adding his Private Blend line of unisex fragrances was originally conceived with his men’s store design in mind.

“The men’s stores are dark and luxurious. [When creating the White Musk Collection] I was in the mood for something lighter and a little fresher. In the world today, we’re all in the mood for something simple, fresh, light and a little less heavy. At least that’s what I’m in the mood for,” Ford said.

“This is his ‘white period,’” added Diana Waldron, vice president of global marketing for Tom Ford Beauty, adding the White Musk Collection is intended to appeal to men as well as women. “[Ford] felt a need and a creative desire to look at the musk category. There’s been nothing new there in a long time.”

White Musk Collection’s packaging is intended to reiterate Ford’s penchant for a lighter aesthetic. The requisite Private Blend bottles are made with clear glass and topped with white lids, rather than the dark glass and caps used for the line’s existing scents.

“I wanted [the brand] to be perceived more as a fragrance house than as designer fragrances,” said Ford of his decision to tweak Private Blend’s existing flacons for the White Musk Collection. “I was careful to choose a bottle architecture that would create a unified statement.”

While Ford honed in on musk as the linchpin of the collection, he also aimed to offer a varied take on the theme. “Musk is an ingredient I’ve loved for a long time,” he said, adding the note was in vogue in the Seventies. “When mixed with other ingredients, it gives another tone that’s animalic; there’s warmth and a sensuality that’s like skin. I think it makes things smell more human.”

While he still perceives gender differentiation for fragrance ingredients as futile, Ford allowed the White Musk Collection plays with a female-oriented fragrance palette.

“We were working with ingredients considered classically feminine,” he said, adding in the Victorian era, violet was considered a classic for men, whereas now it is generally pegged as a feminine note. “A lot of that is fashion.”

Waldron noted that Black Orchid, Ford’s first women’s fragrance that bowed in 2006, has a 30 percent male customer base. Jasmine Musk, which Ford sports from the new collection, comprises notes of ylang-ylang, jasmine, patchouli, orris, vanilla, sandalwood, vetiver, cistus and amber, as well as two musks. Urban Musk comprises ambrette seed absolute extra, white pepper CO2, notes of cumin, white honey, jasmine sambac, black plum, Tonkin musk headspace and benzoin Laos orpur. Musk Pure has notes of bergamot, pepper, ylang-ylang orpur, jasmine, lily of the valley, orris butter, orris absolute, jasmine sambac, tonka, benzoin tears and Laotian beeswax. White Suede has notes of Bulgarian rose, saffron, thyme, mate tea, olibanum, lily of the valley, amber, suede and sandalwood. Givaudan perfumers worked with Ford on all of the scents except White Suede, which was developed with Firmenich.

The eaux de parfum will be available alongside the existing Private Blend line in 50-ml. spray bottles priced at $180 in the U.S. The line will hit shelves in North America in September and will roll out internationally starting in November.

While Waldron declined to reveal projections, industry sources estimate the White Musk Collection will generate first-year retail sales of $5 million to $8 million. Those sources estimate Private Blend’s annual revenues are in the region of $25 million.

“Given the global economy and what’s happened to luxury in general, the business has been doing outstandingly well — particularly Private Blend,” Waldron said. “It has grown unbelievably.”

Private Blend is sold in 55 doors globally, but that door count will grow to at least 100 by the end of 2010. Ford’s more mainstream fragrances, including Black Orchid, are distributed through about 2,100 doors worldwide.

The designer has also cooked up a men’s scent, dubbed Grey Vetiver, which will bow in September. Also set to debut in the fall is Ford’s first film, “A Single Man.”

“The filming experience was amazing,” he said, explaining he’d like to do a movie every two or three years. “As a designer, it’s the ultimate experience as you’re not just designing the clothes [the characters] are wearing, you’re designing their lives, what they do and what they say. You design a complete world.”

While structuring his celluloid universe, Ford recounted he partook in interim design fittings using iChat.

“I love being in both worlds,” he said, adding, while he doesn’t have concrete plans as yet, he may consider a return to designing women’s wear.

Like White Musk, Ford’s filmic debut will apparently reveal his softer side. “It’s different to what people think of me. It’s very romantic,” he said. “There’s no sex in my movie — a few kisses and that’s it.”

The fact that Jennifer Lopez ascribes to the gospel of La Mer for her perfectly smooth, radiant skin is fairly common knowledge, although her signature bronzed glow has little to do with the miracle cream. Chalk that up to the self-described “King of Bling” makeup artist Scott Barnes, who has been tending to the singer-turned-actress’ honey-gold complexion since Jenny from the Block became J. Lo. We caught up with Barnes on the set of Lopez’s new flick, The Back-Up Plan (a romantic comedy about a woman who chooses artificial insemination after tiring of the search for Mr. Right—very new millennium), to talk bronzer for summer and beyond.

What’s your advice for steering clear of that unfortunate orange aftereffect that some bronzers can leave behind?

My tip is don’t go too dark. I’ve crossed the line myself but it’s all about knowing when to say I’ve gone too far. People have called me “a man to glow with” because my whole thing is that bronzer should radiate, and to get that result the key is moisture.

So would you recommend cream-based bronzers over powder then?

Liquid bronzers, like my Body Bling, work well to this end, and I just repackaged my cult favorite in a squeeze tube that should be out by the end of the month.

What about application techniques? Is there one right way to apply product for the perfect sun-kissed glow?

In general, I try to abide by a less-is-more mentality: You can always layer more on but it’s harder to take it off. It’s really all in the approach, though. I always see women applying powders and bronzers starting next to their nose. But the trick is to work from the outside of the face inward, rather than the other way around. This creates a halo effect and leaves a diamond shape of light in the center so your face appears a little more open. This will hide double chins and give you a visible bone structure so you don’t wind up looking old. Also, use a bronzing brush to blend allover rather than applying product directly to problem areas like crow’s feet and laugh lines. And don’t forget to do your neck and décolletage.

Do you believe that well-applied bronzer can substitute for an actual tan?

Yes! I’m a firm believer in faking it till you make it. I lost my 30-year-old brother to melanoma so I don’t go into the sun anymore and prefer to make products that simulate a natural tan without the health risks from a day spent in the sun.

You must have a good sun care regimen then. Can you share?

Coppertone Sport is actually my favorite sun protection product and it’s at the drugstore—so it’s cheap! The aerosol spray-on version is great because it actually gives you a gorgeous shine. Plus, you can put it on top of your bronzer and it actually seals it!

What about off-season bronzing? Any tips for keeping your complexion warm in the wintertime?

While terracotta bronzing colors are better in the summer because you’re actually spending time in the sun so their reddish brown hues are believable, golden yellow bronzers are better in wintertime, as they tend to be a better complement to sallow, sun-deprived skin. If you’re fair-skinned, pressed powders designed for ethnic skin are the business for winter, like those in Iman’s cosmetics range. They tend to have a lot of gold in them but because they’re all matte finish, you don’t wind up too sparkly.

Makeup sellers seeking to stand out amid crowded cosmetic counters are expanding into a niche once confined to those living under the scrutiny of the lens: high-definition makeup.

The cosmetics, once used just for newscasters, models and actors, are becoming more popular among women who want to appear like they would in HDTV: lifelike, flawless and picture-perfect.

Initially, professional makeup artists used HD cosmetics on celebrities filming in the new system so precise that every detail is magnified more than on standard television. Now, the makers of HD cosmetics are focusing on expanding their use among regular makeup wearers — although not everyone is convinced that consumers should be using HD makeup every day.

The cosmetics, which work when particles in them reflect light instead of absorbing it, are one of the latest trends to hit the industry as companies vie for market share. Morningstar analyst Michelle Chang says there is a “push for innovation” because the industry is so saturated with products.


“There’s always companies trying to find a niche that they can fill,” Chang says. “This is probably one of them, much like how mineral makeup took off in the past two years.”

That form of makeup gained popularity with consumers seeking cosmetics made with natural ingredients, versus preservatives and other chemicals.

More makeup artists are learning how to apply HD makeup in advance of February, when the nation’s broadcasters switch from analog to digital transmission. While not all digital broadcasts are in HD, even standard-definition programming looks sharper when it’s sent digitally.

The better the image, the thinking goes, the more exquisite skin needs to look.

Cosmetic companies are already reporting a rise in the number of makeup artists coming for training on how to apply HD cosmetics by airbrush, a technique that gained popularity decades ago when MGM used it to paint extras as tan Romans for “Ben Hur.”

“The airbrush applies the makeup to the surface in a dot pattern and replicates the pixels that HD uses,” says Samantha Mandor, a spokeswoman for cosmetics company Temptu. “With traditional makeup, you can see brush strokes; it really shows every flaw.”

Temptu’s HD makeup graced the runways at New York Fashion Week this month, its vibrant hues of purple and yellow on the eyes of models fitted in evening wear by designer Joanna Mastroianni.

Before the show, artists poured liquid makeup into little spray guns, and then airbrushed the silicone-based HD makeup on the models in a fine, colorless mist. It smelled a bit like paint when first applied, but the result was an odorless, light foundation as the silicone in the makeup absorbed the skin’s natural oil.

Mandor says the prices are comparative to traditional department-store makeup. A 1-ounce bottle of the company’s Hi-Def S/B makeup, which can be applied by airbrush or hand, is $25. By comparison, Clinique’s Perfectly Real foundation is priced at $22.50, while a drugstore brand like Cover Girl’s TruBlend Whipped foundation costs around $10.

Other lines of HD makeup come from Christian Dior and Cargo, a Canadian cosmetics company. Cargo’s line, named “blu—ray,” was created for makeup artists filming in HD television, but began selling at retail this spring.

Smashbox cosmetics, a unit of Smashbox Studios — the photo and film company founded by the great-grandsons of Hollywood cosmetics legend Max Factor — rolled out its HD makeup in March, and has seen it become one of the company’s top-selling products.

Cosmetics sales overall have held up relatively well despite the weaker U.S. economy. Deutsche Bank analyst Bill Schmitz Jr. said in a note to investors that sales of color cosmetics rose 1.2 percent year-over-year for the four-week period ending Aug. 10.

At a Sephora in midtown Manhattan, several women gathered around Makeup Forever and pawed through the brand’s HD cosmetics. Sara Gomez picked up the $30 HD Microfinish Powder, stuck her finger in the sample and rubbed the powder between her fingers.
